Harry Potter Illuminated Wand Pen

I knew it – there was no such thing as phoenix feathers powering a magic want – but rather, batteries. Yes sir, batteries are the stuff of life, at least on the Muggle side of things over here. After all, cracking open the $9.99 Harry Potter Illuminated Wand Pen won’t reveal any feather of sorts inside, and I must say that this wand works differently from the rest – in fact, it might yield far more power than what you watch at the movies.

How so, you ask? Well, give this pen into the hands of President Obama and see him sign a bill that passes a certain law – will even the great Harry Potter be able to do that with all his incantations and spells at his disposal? I doubt so. Guess this is good enough to write down your spells for memorization, but other than that, the other kind of magic it is capable of is this – helping you remember very, very important dates such as your wedding anniversary by writing it down somewhere – forget that and no spell on earth can protect you from the wrath of a woman scorned.

Trac-King GPS device from Rocky Mountain Tracking

There are dime a dozen GPS navigation and tracking devices in the market these days that it can get pretty hard trying to figure out which is more suitable for your personal use. Rocky Mountain Tracking, Inc. (RMT) has recently added to the number of GPS devices in the market, although their product has the potential to be the most innovative device yet. Known as the Trac-King (GPS Tracking) device, this convenient and portable-passive GPS will be powered by a couple of AA batteries, where those simple, readily available batteries will be able to juice up the Trac-King for up to 80 hours of continuous movement on a single battery cycle. Useful when you’re on long road trips and visiting countries where power outlets are not easily available -there’s nothing quite like the widespread availability of AA batteries to help you out here. Of course, it would be better to obtain rechargeables that can be juiced up using solar panels.

The Trac-King was specially developed to be a more advanced version of the Tracking Key and 3100, where both of them are passive devices has seen RMT move around 12,000 units over the past 2 years. The Trac-King is capable of tracking virtually every second of movement, and this data is accurate to within a few meters, in addition to taking note of times, addresses, direction and speed of travel, and stop duration. Guess bosses who want to know where their employees have gone to as well as parents who can’t bear the thought of their kids being responsible drivers when away from home will find the Trac-King useful.

All tracking data is stored within the device itself, where the user can retrieve it at a later time by downloading the information via USB to a computer. You can choose from a daily log, route display from street maps, or route display on satellite imagery using Google Earth when it comes to viewing the collected data. The Trac-King is pretty hardy, coming in a completely water resistant ABS plastic casing and has been magnetized to install it within or outside of a vehicle.

Samsung outs new 70 Series monitors

With so many LCD monitors to choose from these days, what are some of the choices available to the common man? Well, Samsung has just added to your headache by compounding the “problem” with a trio of new 70 Series Monitors, and they are the P2070, P2370 and P2370HD. Two of these slim LCD monitors will feature a screen depth of 30mm, while the P2370HD is measured at 65.5mm. The three of them will also boast Samsung’s very own Touch of Color (ToC) design. The 70 Series of LCD monitors were meant to impart the performance capability of Samsung TVs onto the average desktop, as more and more people take up the option to view their TV shows on a computer in addition to using it for daily productivity tasks.

All three models of the 70 Series Monitors will come with a dynamic contrast ratio (50,000:1) for deep, rich colors, while the 2ms (GTG) video response time minimizes blurring for watching sports and fast-moving gameplay. The inclusion of its crystal-like bezel frame complete with ToC helps reduce the reflection of light and glare for a more comfortable viewing experience. Samsung designers also decided to make the monitor look as though it was floating in mid-air thanks to a clear, crystal-like acrylic neck.

Samsung has also integrated its very own Startlight Touch Controls in terms of the On Screen Display (OSD) buttons being merged into the bezel itself, making the entire monitor feel and look like one seamless device without any ugly obtrusive buttons on the front or sides. All it takes to activate these buttons is a single touch, where light illuminating these controls will disappear automatically after a determined period of time in order to minimize distractions while you’re engrossed in your favorite movie. There is no word on pricing or availability for all three 70 Series LCD TVs as at press time, but you’ll be pleased to know they come with a suite of eco-conscious features such as reduced energy consumption, making it sip around 33% less power to operate against standard monitors of similar size. Guess you can shortlist the Samsung 70 Series if you’re looking to upgrade your monitor in the near future.

GoCycle electric bicycle

As information becomes easier to disseminate these days, it is no surprise that more and more people are taking up the environmentally friendly route, making choices that will affect our eco-system positively. While there has been some progress, there remains a whole lot more work to be done in the long run. One of the ways to do your part is choosing green forms of transport, and the GoCycle electric bicycle is a decent option if you do plenty of intra-city travel. This is the world’s lightest production electric bicycle, tipping the scales at just 16.2kg. Despite its small size, it is able to move you for around 20 miles before requiring a recharge, and at a top speed of 15mph to boot. Recharge time currently stands at 3.5 hours, and the £1,158 price point will come with a sealed-for-life chain, a decent suspension system to prevent sore buttocks and three-speed gearing.

The pizza box goes green

According to recent studies, Pizza is a $30 billion dollar industry. That’s a heck of a lot of cardboard boxes in our landfills. But a Pizza box company has come up with a very simple pizza box design which recycles and reuses the box the pizza comes in with a simple tear along the serrated lines. Bet you didn’t think a simple square box could be redesigned, did you?

Dubbed the Green Box, the topbreaks down into 4 serving plates, while the bottom of the box folds into a convenient storage container to keep leftover pizza warm, or for storing into the refrigerator for later.

This is a fantastic idea which shows what one an do just by asking the question, what can do I to this to make it better for Mother Earth? No real raise in price or quality control, just a few serrated lines and folds in the right spot and you have a multi-tasking box that not only cuts down on paper plates in our landfills, but becomes even more efficient in keeping the heat in for what’s leftover.

Just don’t forget to recycle it when you’re done.

Electrolux Dishwasher uses Wind and UV Rays to Clean

Many people complain that dishwashers waste too much water between cycles, but there isn’t a better to way to wash them other than spraying them with gallons of scalding hot water.

It would appear that there is another way to clean dishes with this concept device known as the Electrolux Wind Washer. It does this by using air and UV rays for cleaning.

Yeah, don’t ask me how air and UV rays can clean a dish, unless there is some serious high pressured air going on. I would imagine that you would have to affix this to a big and loud air compressor to make that work.

Also, it seems to be made for just two plates. What kind of pathetic dishwasher is capable of just two plates?

Okay, this is only a concept for now, so I’m not going to be too picky. Hopefully someone will eventually create a full-sized dishwasher, but I’m not certain how it will get the angles on all the plates. Since the plates are sandwiched in there, I am assuming that this process only works if the plates are hit on both sides by air and UV rays.

While we’re at it, lets talk about glasses and silverware. How is it going to do those? Okay, this new technology has a lot of bugs in it, but you have to give credit to these innovators for trying to save water and doing something different.

Donut shaped modification makes wind generators more efficient

Wind power is a viable alternative for green energy – particularly in arid areas where there’s plenty of wind, but little of anything else. Trouble is, that wind turbines aren’t as efficient as they should and need to be. A company named Leviathan Energy seems to have a very simply way to improve the efficiency of wind turbines … and it involves donuts.

Based on computer models, Leviathan has designed a plastic and metal don’t skirt which, after affixed around the base of each turbine, will direct air flow directly into the optimal area for the Wind Turbine blades to operate. The result is more air going across the blade airfoils and more energy being harvested as a result. How much more? Leviathan estimates that power output of an average wind turbine can be increased on order of magnitude from 15-30% and at lower wind speeds. Meaning that in light wind conditions that Wind turbines may actually be still and unused, they can now harvest enough energy to increase outputs by up to 150%. And that makes it very attractive.

The downside, however, is that according to Leviathan, each skirt has to be custom engineered and fit to reflect the size and height of the wind turbine, the blades they use, even the position of the turbine on the wind farm. But with an estimated return of 4-5 on investment, it could be a very good accessory that yields powerful dividends.

Xerox ColorQube 9200 uses Solid Ink

If there is one thing that I can’t stand, it is changing out the printer cartridges. Usually it goes off without a hitch, but there are times where the ink gets all over your hands. Of course, it is impossible to wash off because it’s well…ink.

Xerox has discovered a way to revolutionize printing cartridges with the ColorQube 9200. These cartridges are solid ink, which is a fancy way of saying that they are big crayons.

The user has put these big square crayons into the machine, and the printer will melt and squirt them in the proper places. Three of the slots are for the primary colors, so the red, blue, and yellow should be capable of making any color on the page. There is also a separate slot for black, which will probably need to be replaced often.

Speaking of the replacements, the ink cubes have to be replaced every 55,000 pages. The ColorQube can print up to 150 million drops of ink per second, which is good enough “to print at 38 ppm up to 85 ppm”.

Xerox says that this new solid ink cartridge system can reduce the cost of printing pages by 62 percent. Of course, you have to ask if saving two-thirds is worth it, as the printer for this solid ink system costs about $22,000.

Cluster bomb technology used for seed planting

Anti War activists hate cluster bombs – mostly because they can be used to deploy anti personnel mines which don’t get picked up long after the last bullet has been fired. And when they go off, even children are victims. But can the technology be harnessed for more constructive and green purposes? Designer Hwang Jin Wook seems to think so and as such, he came up with the “Seedbomb.”

The concept is amazingly simple and represents the coolness of out of the box thinking. Instead of tiny bombs known as “bomblets” or anti personnel mines, the SeedBomb has Seed capsules aligned in a cluster configuration. Each cluster of capsules is packed into a single bomb with dozens of others and when the bomb reaches optimum altitude, the clusters are released to embed all around the impact area. Each capsule contains soil and seeds housed in a biodegradable plastic. The soil is packed with plant rich nutrients and moisture enough to allow the plant seed to germinate (the plastic canister acts as a defacto greenhouse) and grow until the plant can sustain itself. As the plant matures, the biodegradable plastic canister deteriorates until there’s nothing left.

The idea is brilliant for deploying to areas stricken by desertification or deforestation. And It’s easy to see the Forestry department using them to reseed areas that have recently fallen victim to wildfires or bark beetle infestation. But can just planting plants change an environment? Not on it’s own, but if you consider that with all the golf courses it has, that the average temperature of Palm Springs has DROPPED 20 degrees in the last 25 years, it’s worth looking at.

Two New Technologies that Imitate the Worm

Worms are taking over technology! The first is a cleaning robot that you see in this picture here. It is developed by Panasonic, and it is known as the Fukitorimushi. I don’t speak Japanese, but it should translate into “cleaning worm”. Like a Roomba, it can somehow sense dirty spots on the floor and clean them up.

It does it in an odd way, as it moves across the floor like an inchworm. I am assuming that it does this to imitate the human motion of scrubbing the floor, and captures the dust and grit in its nanocloth sleeve.

You can see a video of the Fukitorimushi after the jump, and I’ve also included a video of the other worm. This worm is not designed for cleaning per se, but some roboticists at Tokyo’s Waseda University have created some gel that also moves like an inchworm. Apparently, it is capable of independent motion, changing colors, and even performing calculations. Who knows what it could do in the future?

So why is the worm being used as a model for new technology? Personally, I think someone has been watching too many episodes of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. In case you haven’t been watching it, there is a liquid metal terminator that takes the form of a wiggly worm.

With all these worm-like robots, I can’t help but wonder if we are seeing the beginning of robot evolution. It started with the nanobot, but will it end with the humanoid robot? And will that end be a terminator? Oh, the future looks so bright.

IV Drip Hard Drive keeps your files safe

Anti virus systems on your computer are so dull. Really they just sit there and scare off all the nasty things that like to infest your computer. That’s all well and good, but couldn’t they keep things interesting? Even just a little? Well this design puts a humorous take on keeping viruses out of your computer and holding onto your files for you. Of course they show it on a Mac and everyone knows that nothing can kill a Mac. It’s inconceivable!

Well alright, Macs might not be entirely indestructible. This odd hard drive with an anti virus program includes an IV drip bag that blinks and flashes its lights when it’s at work. Giving you a visual reminder that your anti virus is at work. Of course that also means that you have yet another gadget clogging up your USB port. This is still a concept hard drive though by Hyuh Jin Lee. If it did ever hit the market, it might be worth the extra port it uses up.

Star Trek USB Communicator Internet Phone

The never ending battle between Star Wars and Star Trek fans continue, but this has not stopped either franchise from milking their fanbase dry with a bunch of new peripherals and products. Case in point, the Star Trek USB Communicator Internet Phone that was re-released in time to ride the wave of the Star Trek movie this summer. This VoIP handset will feature USB plug-and-play, making it compatible with most common software including Skype, MSN, AIM, Ichat and others. It also comes with a built-in microphone and earphone, alongside an integrated speaker with 21 sound effects to boot. You might not hitch a ride to space with this, but at least you can pretend you’re talking to someone else on another planet with this $43 peripheral.

Garmin introduces Oregon 550 and Oregon 550t

Garmin is a household name when it comes to GPS navigation devices, and today they have yet another two models available to the masses - the Oregon 550 and Oregon 550t. Both of these devices will be touchscreen enabled, where they will also be accompanied by a 3.2 megapixel digital camera that will help you snap memorable shots wherever you go just in case you forgot to pack your dedicated digital camera with you. In addition, this mode also enables you to create geotagged images on the spot. Another interesting feature is the 3-axis compass that will accompany the the popular series of intuitive touchscreen handhelds. Not only do the Oregon 550 and Oregon 550t get you places, it boasts a waterproof case so that you can still find your way around even though it is raining.

The 3.2 megapixel autofocus digital camera you get is also equipped with a 4x digital zoom, and the device itself is also equipped with 850MB of internal memory, which is more than enough space for you to store all your photos as well as locations. These images can then be downloaded onto a computer or external storage device later on, where they can be printed or stored and shared online. Transferring images is a no brainer - make sure your Oregon 550 is connected via USB, where you can use the my.Garmin.com site to detect Oregon’s photos. The Chord Indigo Advanced DAC iPod Dock

Most people are satisfied well enough with fairly affordable iPod docks. Usually it’s not really needed to go over a couple hundred dollars for even the biggest music lovers. However, if you’re looking for something extremely high end that will cost you a small fortune, this could be the dock for you. Just by glancing at the dock, most people would be able to guess that this is no ordinary dock. This is the kind of dock that you sell your car so that you can purchase it.

Of course typically these will be purchased by people who have a serious chunk of change just lying around. For the average person though, it’d take selling your car to be able to afford it. The dock has a built-in wireless radio link option that can stream any audio signal. That includes from your iPod itself, to any A2DP Bluetooth enabled device. Although I by no means think this is worth the money you’ll pay for it. It would be great for those that want top of the line electronics. You can pick it up for a whopping $12,000.

The Water Clock for the extreme minimalist

This clock may be about as minimalist as it gets, but it leaves plenty of room on your part for a bit of creativity. This clock consists only of two tiny discreet balls, anyone glancing at them would never know what they are. Actually even after you have them all set up, it may take you a long while to figure out what time it is exactly. With this around though, you get to choose the china you put these within, giving it your own personalized look.
They are two little magnets, the red one shows hours, whereas the small white ball shows the minutes. Choose a cup and then a small plate, add water to them and drop in the magnets. It then keeps time and there’s not even a need for batteries. It doesn’t entirely explain how it all works, but I’m sure if you order it they’ll give more instructions on that sort of thing. Despite that this is merely consisting of two little magnets, this clock is a bit on the expensive side. The Water Clock will cost you $299 from Generate.

Robot Spiders Prepare to Explore the Sea

Every once in a while, somebody envisions a robot that feels plucked from a science-fiction movie or novel. Take this undersea robot concept from the Fraunhofer Institute, for example.

Believe it or not, this robot is designed to work independently and underwater. As you can see, the apparatus has four propellers for stabilization, and some arms too.I’m not certain what sort of projects that they have in mind for them, but deep sea exploration would be a good job, if it wasn’t for the pressures of deep water.

Many other blogs have compared its look to a certain robot that Neo wakes up to in The Matrix. Considering that these robots are programmed to act independently, how long will it be before they build more of themselves, and invade like the machines in The Matrix? The movie of that would be a combination of I, Robotand the 1977 William Shatner classic Kingdom of the Spiders.

The shape reminds me of this episode of GI Joe that takes place underwater. On this show, the evil Destro pulls out a ball that he calls a robot-opus and throws it at the good guys. Don’t ask me how he throws this underwater, but this tiny robot-opus ball opens up like an eye and sprouts eight tentacles to attack.

Well, time will tell if this concept robot becomes reality.

The Heart Handbag Necklace USB Drive

Mother’s Day usually means tons of very cheesy and fairly cheap jewelry. Well if you are going to pick up some cheesy jewelry, it might as well be useful too. This heart necklace is probably more something a young kid would think their Mom would love, but sometimes moms still love this stuff. It comes covered in crystals, so there’s no doubt that it will be eye catching. Then it also hides away a USB drive.

Thankfully with this there are no worries of losing the cap to it. The drive just slides away to be hidden within the heart. It’s actually a handbag shaped heart pendant. The drive itself is only 2GB, which isn’t anything stellar, but it works. It also won’t break the bank to pick it up either. You can pick it up from Gadget4all in either pink or white for $23. You should probably get rush shipping though since Mother’s Day is right around the corner.

DJ Hero from Activision

Games like Guitar Hero and RockBand have been sweeping the video game nation, so why not create a musical game based on DJ-ing?

Yes, it would appear that Activision has created DJ Hero, a game that will require a new type of controller that you see here. Not much else is known about DJ Hero except that it will have different genres of music like hip-hop, R&B, Motown, electronica, and dance.

Does anyone think that it is odd that the controller is a turntable with a few “frets” on the record itself? I actually tried out DJing at the Experience Music Project, a museum in downtown Seattle. I realize that doesn’t make me a professional DJer by any means, but I don’t think there should be any buttons on the record album at all.

The only reason why I know about DJ Hero is because someone posted pictures of the controller on a twitter account appropriately named “DJHero”. It is amazing how quickly information spreads on the net.

DJ Hero is due out this fall, but there is no word on a price. We do know that Guitar Hero 5 is also due to be released, as well as a new game called Band Hero. Band Herois apparently a RockBand or Guitar Hero: World Tour for the younger crowd, with a guitar, drums, bass, and microphone and an E10 rating with family friendly top 40 hits.

WiPC by BlueRadios Inc.

WiPC? Because there is apparently a need for wireless mobile broadband devices, that’s why. Okay, that joke didn’t really work, but who wouldn’t want “access to Internet-based information and entertainment content as well as voice, data, and video communications”.

Of course, one of the limitations to the WiPC or any MID is that tiny screen to surf the net with. Fortunately, this WiPC has a high-resolution color liquid crystal micro display, and superior magnifying optics coupled with some video technology can create a “virtual 15 inch image”. I’m not certain how that is possible to enlarge that image of that size.

Still, you’ve got to admire the miniaturization process that BlueRadios has accomplished. According to the company president and CEO Mark Kramer, they have reduced a typical 5 pound laptop down to 3 ounces. Not bad.

This product will be available to “OEMs and large consumer electronics distributors with advanced operating systems such as Windows, Android, or Linux”. It can also support Bluetooth 3.5G, WiFi, and GPS. There is no word on a price as yet. Anyone want to comment with an estimate?

Amazon Kindle DX launched

Amazon’s Kindle e-book reader did make quite an impression when it was first revealed, and as time goes by, it is only natural for a successor to be unleashed. This time round, Amazon has upgraded the Kindle by calling it the Kindle DX which boasts a whole host of improvements including a more generous 9.7″ electronic paper display, a built-in PDF reader, auto-rotate capability for easy reading no matter which format the digital book/magazine comes in, and enough storage space to hold an average of 3,500 books - definitely more than enough space for your personal library. For voracious readers, you won’t find the Kindle Store to be short of reading material as it stocks up to 275,000 books (and counting) to date, including 107 of 112 current New York Times Best Sellers. Panasonic announces LUMIX DMC-GH1 pricing

Panasonic has finally announced the pricing of its new Micro Four Thirds digital camera, the LUMIX DMC-GH1, where it will hit retail stores sometime early this June for a rather expensive $1,499.95. Well, at that price point, you not only get full High Definition video recording capability, you will also benefit from the inclusion of the LUMIX G VARIO 14-140mm/F4.0-5.8 ASPH/MEGA O.I.S. lens as part of the kit. This new lens will boast a silent motor and continuous auto focusing (AF) capability, making it fundamentally different from standard DSLRs.

For folks residing in the US, they will be able to pick up the LUMIX GH1 in the very same color that Henry Ford allowed the Model T to be available - black. RealD LP Accessory brings 3D to Projectors

A company known as RealD, a huge name in tech in the 3D world, has created the RealD LP, a Linear Polarizing Z Screen that can “bring the power of 3D to the small screen”. The company has also stated that the RealD LP is “the world’s first mobile, single-projector, passive 3D solution”.
The RealD LP is a peripheral that sits in front of a projector lens, and can polarize the imagery from 3D enabled projectors. Yes, you will need to wear the glasses, but you can wear the polarized ones instead of the circular system that is normally used.
The RealDLP is made for projectors, preferably those in business meeting rooms, R&D centers, and museum exhibits. I suppose that the next logical step is to make this accessible for the typical consumer.
So, what are we looking at here? An age where 3D is available in every home that has a projector? Well, it would certainly make all these 3D movies that are coming to the theater worth watching when they come to video.

Dareway is a Segway for kids

Kids already have the option to own little miniature cars to ride in with batteries that run for about 20 minutes before they die. They also have electronic scooters and other various items to ride on. Well now kids can own their own kid size version of a Segway, only for them it’s called a Dareway. There is a version for both boys and girls, and it will move them around just like your average Segway. Although I imagine this one is not quite as well built.

The girl version is bright pink with purple accents and then there is a second version that is silver and black. It operates on a 12v recharageable battery and of course they include the battery charger. The Dareway can travel forwards, backwards, left and right. All of this is done with the foot accelerator and the thumb operated directional buttons. It also can of course spin a full 360 degrees. It’s created for kids 5 years and up, although I’m sure there is some kind of a weight limit on them. You can purchase one for £149.99 or about $226.

Rytir MID

In all honesty, I’m not certain what the market is for MID (Mobile Internet Devices). After all, if most people have the Internet on their smartphone, I’m not certain if people need a mobile device that is exclusively for viewing the Internet.

This particular concept from designer Jan Rytir could tip the scales of the MID market quite considerably. This MID, which doesn’t have any working title, is very small, measuring in at 180 x 80 x 20mm.

The screen is an ultra-wide LCD screen that is an OLED. It is a nice slider that reveals a full QWERTY keyboard and a tiny trackball. It also features an Intel Atom processor, two USB slots, a microphone, an audio input, stereo speakers, as well as a docking connector and SD card reader.

I’m not certain if this product will ever hit the market. As for me, I like watching my Internet on my computer, and the tiny screen of a MID like this just forces me to squint real hard, honestly.

Are we at an age where we are used to the tiny Internet browser? Please chime in with a comment if you think that this time is nigh, or if we are already in it. If so, the Rytir MID has a definite future.

Digilegs Turn You into Mr. Tumnus

When I first watched the Disney version of The Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe, I was amazed at the shot of Mr. Tumnus the faun stamping the snow off his goat-like legs. I am assuming that CG special effects were used for that shot, but there is now a new way to play a satyr.

The Digigrade Leg Extensions are made of steel, cable, and foam. They allow a user “the uncanny and graceful appearance of an animal”. Side effects include adding 14 inches to the user’s height, and a temporary lack of balance. How long? According to Seattle artist Kim Graham, she says that these legs take about 10 or 15 minutes to get used to.

There are no plans to mass-market these new legs, but these specially made goat legs will cost in the neighborhood of $775, or $1,000 with the artificial and oversized hooves. I’m not certain that they come with fur, but that’s what the YouTube video shows. You can see for yourself after the jump.

I suppose the target audience for these Digilegs are those who need to have authentic goat legs in a movie or play. For example, if Guillermo del Toro wants to make a sequel toPan’s Labyrinth. That doesn’t sound too likely, so maybe Disney will make some more Narnia films and order up several pairs of Digilegs.

The extremely tiny Lingo Wireless Mouse

There’s no question that everyone appreciates a bit of portability. It makes it so that you have far less to carry around and it’s less of a heavy load. Of course sometimes it gets to the point that it’s just a little too portable. Yes, it’s more convenient, but if it makes it more difficult to use, then it kind of defeats the purpose. This mouse is one of those items that might just be a hair too small for some people. However, if you have tiny hands, then perhaps this mouse is a dream come true.

This one isn’t out just yet, but will be hitting Japan next month. This mouse only measures 27.5 x 60 x 19mm, so it’s definitely not very big. Then with only a weight of 23g it makes the mouse super lightweight as well. The mouse is actually said to be the smallest out there right now, which I wouldn’t be surprised if it is. The Ylight for convenient tire changing

The LED Alarm Clock with Electronic Bird

The pretty bright white makes it so that although the bird sitting on top is a little whimsical, it would still fit within a home that conforms to most adult standards. Not only that but you’d have the joy of waking up every morning to the sound of a chirping bird instead of that obnoxious beep.

Of course, I think I’d just stuff a pillow over my head thinking it was coming from outside, on mornings that I was more tired than usual. Finding a way to make sure that you have a little something extra for self defense that is convenient for you can sometimes be a bit of a task. Carrying around a small keychain of pepper spray isn’t for everyone, partially because they’re so bulky to have hanging from your keys. PXP-900: Looks like a PSP, plays like the old school

The PXP-900 is clearly designed to look like something else. See if you can figure it out. If you’re stuck, just look to the triangle, circle, square, and X keys on the right.

Yeah, this PXP-900 is no Sony Playstation PSP, but you would probably never know it until you tried to play it. For instead of the latest from PlayStation Portable, a user would get some old school game like Pole Position.

Yes, it appears this guy can only do Roms such as those from NES, Famicom, Super Famicom, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and SEGA MegaDrive. Granted, I’m not certain of the morality of Roms, because I’ve heard that downloading them can be hazardous to your legal health.

So who is the PXP-900 for? Perhaps for people like me, who remember the days of early eighties/nineties video games with a love. Someone who knows that the video games they put out now are nothing compared with the addictive ones put out back then.

If you are old enough to remember the video games of that bygone era, then you might have a kid who is begging you for a PSP. Something tells me that you can probably pick up the PXP-900 for a cheaper price. Your kid will probably be disappointed, but he or she might come to like older games. It’s a bonding experience waiting to happen!

Slimo: Transport of the Future?

My source for this article titled his article “If Apple ruled the world, we’d all ride in these ‘Slimos’”. All I could think of when I saw that title was: “you mean Apple doesn’t rule the world?”

How else can you explain one billion app downloads for iPhones? Or the millions who owe millions to iTunes? Apple may never win that “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” war, but most would give about one hundred percent of anything for just ten percent of Apple.

But back to the subject at hand: the Slimos. What are these things? The first time I saw it, I thought it was the mode of transportation for the next attraction at Disneyland.

Well, they are a mode of transportation, but so much more. Think of them as a mobile cubicle, complete with built-in computer. Once these guys get connected together like a train, you have a very interesting way to carpool! However, you can’t expect these things to go that fast, right?

Well, this Slimo is apparently a concept from designer Sung uk Kim, but I’m seeing more of an inspiration from VW, especially with that logo on the front. Perhaps if the future brings the entire world as one gigantic amusement park, this would be the mass transit system.

Podio MP3 Player for Cyclists

Every once in a while, you will see a biker who likes to pedal with his iPod. As far as I know, there is no law for doing this, but I’m pretty certain that listening to music while biking is going to block out some ambient noise.

While it is completely illegal to drive with headphones, there is another danger of having an iPod on a bike. Those earbud wires could get caught in the spokes, and then cause an accident.

I suppose this is why the Podio has been invented. The Podio is a Taiwanese MP3 player made for the bicycle. As you can see, it clips directly to the bar of the bike itself, and your music will be heard. I’m sure that you can also see that there is a speaker on this, so it doesn’t look like it is really designed for solitary playing. I would imagine that the Podio probably comes with a headphone jack, but it probably shouldn’t be used for reasons that I mentioned before.

So far, the Podio is still under development, and it is planned to have about 20 hours of use after one charge. As for memory, that is going to be at 2GB for WMA and MP3s. What we don’t have is any word on when it will be out.

Entecho’s Hoverpod

I remember watching an episode ofMythbusters where they were discussing the possibility of hovering technology. Apparently, Adam and Jamie had grown up seeing the same ads on the back covers of comic books that promised an “Air Car”, and I remember these ones too.

The Mythbusters then challenged each other to a race with hovering vehicles that they built on their own. They were able to get them to hover, but getting any forward motion on them proved problematic.

It would appear that Australian company Entecho has figured out an application for hover technology. This fan-forced flying saucer could start a serious transportation revolution as the huge blades spin to give it lift, and the skirt around it gives it directional manipulation.

The hoverpod is capable of speeds of 120 km per hour, with a range of 3 km. I’m not certain what that means, but I believe that it can hover up to 1.5 meters off the ground. This hoverpod can hold about three passengers, and it is quite safe as no blades are exposed.

Sadly, this vehicle is still under development, and has been for the past several years. I hope it comes out soon. I mean, we may be nowhere near that futuristic age of flying cars any time soon, but I would imagine that hovering cars is a necessary step.

UVSunSense Wristbands

So what makes the UVSunSense different than those other sun-bands? Well, most of those sun bands don’t let you know when you need to reapply your sunscreen.

Here’s how it works in a nutshell. As you put on your sunscreen, you also put a dab of the lotion on the UVSunSense. The band will turn purple in the sunshine, but this color will not last. In fact, the user should take note of when it turns colorless, as it will be time to put on more sunscreen.

There are actually two ways that this bracelet can save your skin. On the side of this guy is a note saying: “Apply sunscreen to this side”. If the user cannot read this, it would be a good idea to quit their day at the beach. Now there’s something I wish I would have done yesterday.

Envirobank Gives you Money for Recyclables

This next product is for those who are truly “greening their routine”. I myself usually take a trip to the recycling plant once per week. Sadly, this has nothing to do with my love for Mother Earth. It just so happens that I can save a lot of money on my garbage bill.

Envirobank has figured out a way that consumers can deposit their recyclables in a conveniently located machine, and give them a cash reward for their ecologically sound actions. These machines have been called “reverse vending machines” as users give aluminum cans to the machine, and it gives them money right back.

In addition to aluminum cans, these machines accept PET, HDPE, and PVC recyclable materials as well as brown, clear, and green glass. My sources say that some of these machines can hold up to 3,000 containers.

I am assuming that some recycler eventually comes by and picks up all the drop-offs, replenishes the money slot, and the recyclables will already be cleaned and crushed. I believe that in order to receive the payments for the recycled trash, the user needs to watch a video via an LCD screen on the machine itself.

This new system of reverse vending machines has already been deployed in Australia, but only on a trial basis. Personally, I think a system like this could easily change the world, and maybe even save the Earth in the process.

Rocky The Monster Speakers for the young at heart

If you’re buying speakers for a kid or just a kid at heart, this would be a fun one to have around. It’s not really a great portable speaker to carry everywhere, but it’d be nice to sit at home. It’s especially good for the younger crowd since this monster has a mohawk packed full of color changing LED lights. It’d even be great to keep a toddler giggling since he sways side to side along with the music. Giving your music a much more interesting twist.

The Rocky The Monster Speaker will work for any MP3 player you can hook up to a 3.5mm jack. You can plug it up to the wall for power or pop 4 AA batteries into it for portable power. The AC adapter is not included, but oddly the 4 AA batteries are included. Since it does so much, I’d think the batteries would die quickly, so it’d probably be better to pick up the adapter. Thrustmaster offers new accessories for Nintendo DSi

Thrustmaster is more often a name synonymous with joysticks for computers for those who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s, but they’re still around to this day without really releasing anything groundbreaking to date - which is rather surprising, actually. Well, as long as they’re around, it is interesting to note their new releases for the gaming world. This time round, they’ve delved into the arena of portable gaming machines, with the recently released Nintendo DSi being their target. Thrustmaster has revealed a couple of intelligent charging solutions that are well-suited to the multiple applications offered by this highly innovative, yet power-consuming handheld console.

The Nintendo DSi isn’t a large handheld console by any means, and if you’ve played both the DS and the PSP, you’ll know what I mean. The former might even be a wee bit too small for those with large hands, and many people have already complained about experiencing cramps after prolonged hours of gaming. Well, Thrustmaster has something for the lazy with the T-Standee Charger, a multi-position docking station that boasts a streamlined and elegant design which allows the DSi to be charged while being able to play without having to expend additional energy in holding it.

Of course, as one knows, the Nintendo DSi isn’t only a gaming machine as it can be used to surf the Internet, mix music and even view photos and videos with the right kind of software. We would say this comes in handy when you’re lazing around in your bed and want something else to prop the DSi up at your convenience. In addition, the rotating mechanism is perfect for users to adjust the console’s angle in all directions. This amount of flexibility paves the way for optimum comfort, regardless of whether you’re in the midst of a horizontally or vertically aligned game at that point in time.

The other accessory from Thrustmaster is the first personal charger for DSi and DS Lite which has been integrated straight into the console’s wrist strap, known as the T-Strap Charger. The T-Strap Charger looks like a standard wrist strap complete with a safety slider, albeit with the addition of a clever charging case. The case can be divided into 2, revealing a couple of charging connectors where one of them is hooked up to the console while the other connects to a powered USB port.

The T-Standee Charger and T-Strap Charger will retail for $12.99 and $7.99, respectively, with the former hitting retail stores this June while the latter will be out in mid-May.

BlueAnt Q1 Voice Controlled Bluetooth Headset now available

The BlueAnt Q1 Voice Controlled Bluetooth Headset was first launched at CTIA Wireless 2009 earlier this year, although it won’t be made available to the public till Q1 - and nice to know that that day has finally arrived, where we are able to enjoy what is touted to be “the world’s most advanced voice controlled Bluetooth headset.” The BlueAnt Q1 will be available via Sprint’s online stores and telesales channels across the US from this week onwards, where Sprint will have a headstart in terms of sales (theoretically anyways) since they will be able to sell the Q1 exclusively for 30 days followed by additional availability at other national retailers. Hopefully the current bleak economic climate won’t put a damper on sales figures of the Q1.

Some of the more unique features found on the BlueAnt Q1 include a voice control system, where one will enjoy an authentic hands-free experience through the use of “Simply Connect” voice control technology. Customers won’t have to go through the motions of reading up on a thick user manual before getting started - all they need to do is hook up the headset in their ear, listening to the verbal cues and instructions to get the pairing and set up procedures all done in a jiffy. In addition, the BlueAnt Q1 relies on advanced voice recognition software which allows you to speak instructions straight to it. For example, just say, “answer” or “ignore” if you want to pick up or reject a call, respectively. I wonder whether non-native English speakers will have some leeway given to them by the voice recognition software and not be too rigid.

Other features include dual microphones, Voice Isolation Technology, echo cancellation and wind noise protection for the clearest conversations possible. It will retail for $129 a pop, and it would be interesting to see a shootout between this and the Aliph Jawbone PRIME.

Resident Evil Shot Blaster

We all know that the Nintendo Wii is privy to a bunch of peripherals that are actually nothing more than pieces of plastic which are supposed to augment the playing experience, but most of them (golf and tennis attachments) actually end up posing as a bigger risk when it comes to breaking things around in your home as you make that swing. Still, the official Resident Evil (The Umbrella Chronicles) Shot Blaster is now out although it won’t make your aim better in the game. The Shot Blaster comes with an integrated has cord management system, a Trigger Pull activated B Button, one and two hand shooting modes and quick reload among others. We wonder just how much better will your experience be with this $30 peripheral.

The automatic Mini Sky Umbrella for the delusional

No one likes to deal with dark gloomy days, but we deal with it anyway. Well if you’d like to stay in denial about how bleak the day is looking, you could always pick this umbrella up. Even if the skies are gray, right above you can be bright blue with puffy white clouds. That is, just as long as you keep this umbrella open. Then to keep up the illusion, you could just keep all the curtains drawn for the day at home and work. The umbrella would also be great for the lazy types that can’t be bothered to put any effort into opening their umbrella.

It automatically opens and closes all by itself, all you have to do is push a button. Perhaps someday soon instead of pushing a button, we could just think about it. Those would be the days. Although this would be nice for the lazy, it’s also good for the clumsy types that have issues juggling opening the umbrella and carrying a purse out in the pouring rain. It’s a kind of pricey umbrella though, it’ll cost you $34.95.

The Wind Chime Alarm Clock

Although waking up in the morning isn’t always something to look forward to, you shouldn’t have an alarm clock that makes it worse. Provided you aren’t hard to wake up, there’s no reason you shouldn’t wake up in a pleasant manner. As opposed to that obnoxious beeping that always rudely wakes you up. With this alarm clock you could wake up to the wind chimes instead of a beep.

Of course this still allows for you to wake up to the usual beeps too, if you discover that the chime just isn’t enough. To get an idea of how loud it is, you can check out the seller’s website and watch the video. Although it is a much more pleasant sound, I personally don’t think it’d be enough for me. It runs on 3 AAA batteries and also has a stopwatch function. You can purchase it for $19.95 from Vat19. At that price, it’s worth it to give the clock a shot.

Unitech PA600 MCA has anti-microbial case

Unitech is back with a brand new device for the medical circles - the PA600 MCA (Mobile Clinical Assistant) that functions as a Windows-powered handheld computer, targeting healthcare providers. Not only is it able to handle the most rudimentary of computing tasks often associated with the medical sector, it also comes with an antimicrobial case (now that’s a nice touch) and a built-in RFID reader. The PA600 MCA is tough enough to shrug off four-foot drops according to the company, but that doesn’t mean one ought to go around testing such claims on purpose. It sure as heck won’t be able to stand up to a fling against the wall – a very real scenario should a patient get out of hand and assault the PA600 MCA in the process.

It must be noted that the Unitech PA600 ought not to be confused with Intel’s similarly named MCA reference platform for Windows tablets. It will run on Windows CE 5.0 in a handheld form factor, and for those familiar with devices for such industries, they will find the PA600 MCA to be extremely similar to an earlier offering which lacked 802.11b/g and RFID functionality. The PA600 MCA comes in a white-and-blue color scheme, and what’s interesting about it is the above-mentioned case made of special antimicrobal material. This material was specially created to prevent the spread of MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus) infections, which are more and more commonplace in hospitals these days.

Features of the PA600 MCA include built-in RFID capabilities, a 1D/2D barcode scanner, a 3.5″ touchscreen display with 320 x 240 resolution, an 18-key numeric keypad, all powered by a 520MHz Marvell PXA270 processor alongside 128 RAM, 320MB of flash storage and an SDIO expansion slot. You can choose to hook up the PA600 MCA to an optional docking station for added versatility when working from a desk, and USB ports are available to transfer data to and from a USB flash drive. No idea on how much it costs though, although it is readily available at press time.
